News from Indo-German cooperation

Experts in the field of science and technology attend the 13th IGSTC Foundation Day

Indo-German Science and Technology Centre celebrated its 13th Foundation Day on June 14, 2023, to highlight its achievements and role in promoting the Indo-German Science and Technology partnerships. Stephan Grabherr, Chargé d'Affaires, German Embassy, highlighted the significance of collaborations between industries and universities. He also stressed on the need to foster strong partnerships and knowledge sharing between both countries. Annapurni Subramaniam, Director, Indian Institute of Astrophysics (IIA) was Chief Guest for the occasion. She emphasized on the significance of increasing the representation of women in science and ensuring a proportional number of women-led projects for fostering inclusivity and diversity within the scientific fraternity. Ten women researchers from India and two from Germany were awarded under ‘Women Involvement in Science and Engineering Research’ (WISER) programme to promote female researchers in India/Germany. Industrial Fellowships were given to 20 young Indian researchers from leading academic and research institutions spread across India, in order to carry out research in Germany. In conclusion, scientists and academicians from around 30 Institutions in and around Delhi took part in an outreach event. The attendees were briefed about available opportunities at IGSTC for Indo-German collaboration in S&T.

Call for proposals

IGSTC 2+2 Call 2023

Indo-German Science & Technology Centre (IGSTC) invites First Stage Proposals for joint R&D&I projects of industrial relevance in 2+2 Mode of Partnership. The thematic areas of this call are waste to wealth and sustainable packaging with subtopics, namely, electronic, industrial, domestic and construction waste recycling, secondary raw materials from waste, urban mining/landfill mining, eco-friendly/green packaging materials, design for recycle, and circular economy around the packaging for extending its lifecycle and usability. This call aims to support joint R&D&I projects of industrial relevance by means of “2+2 Mode of Partnership” i.e. involvement of at least one research/academic institute and one public/private industry from both the countries. Applicants from public and private non-profit research organisations, public and private institutions of higher education, universities and public or private companies having R&D bases are eligible to apply.

MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships Call 2023

The Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Postdoctoral Fellowships 2023 Call is now open for applications for Indian and European researchers. These grants will enhance the creative and innovative potential of researchers holding a PhD and wishing to acquire new skills through advanced training and international, interdisciplinary, and inter-sectoral mobility. The call will also allow organisations all over the world to attract talented researchers, including top universities, research centres, public and private organisations as well as medium-sized enterprises. This fellowship program provides opportunities for Indian researchers to pursue postdoctoral research in Europe, while also allowing European researchers to be hosted at Indian institutes. It is open to all fields, including Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics (STEM), Social Sciences and Humanities (SSH), and Economics.

Call for proposals for Max Planck Partner Groups

Max Planck Partner Groups are intended for outstanding junior scientists or postdocs who have obtained their doctorate no longer than ten years ago (medicine: nine years). They must have spent a minimum of 12 months at an MPI before returning to a research institution in their home country. Partner Groups are supported for up to five years with €20,000 p.a. provided from MPG central funds.

International PhD program on Earth System Modelling

The International Max-Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling (IMPRS-ESM) is offering several PhD positions to outstanding students in the field of interdisciplinary climate research. It is a joint programme by the Max Planck Institute for Meteorology and the University of Hamburg. The programme is open to applicants holding a Master’s degree in physics, geophysical sciences (including meteorology and oceanography), ecology, mathematics, computer science, engineering, economics, or political science.

The German Chancellor Fellowship for Indian professionals

The Alexander von Humboldt Foundation invites applications from Indian young professionals from a wide range of fields such as politics, business, media, public administration, society and culture. The Fellowship for prospective leaders offers talented young professionals an opportunity to spend a year in Germany, which they can use to advance their professional training and conduct together with their German host a project they have developed themselves.

Institute of the month

Max Planck Institute for Meteorology
The Max Planck Institute for Meteorology works on the processes that establish Earth’s climate and whatever causes it to change. Its main aim is to understand Earth’s changing climate. Experts at the institute work on questions like, circulation of the atmosphere and ocean, and the weather patterns that accompany it. The creative application of new technology, computers and sensors at the institute, continues to pace the development of understanding. There are two main scientific departments at this MPI, Climate Physics and Climate Variability. The departments carry out research, each with a director, and each with its own particular and self-defined interests and culture. It also collaborates with the Hamburg University for The International Max-Planck Research School on Earth System Modelling, which offers PhD positions to international students, including Indians.

Great Women in Science

Women have been playing an important role in the field of Science and Technology since the very beginning. Hence, we are pleased to start a new feature covering one German or Indian woman scientist every month. This column will give information about the brilliant female scientists who have made or are making their mark in the world of science and technology.

Annapurni Subramaniam

Annapurni Subramanium is the Director of Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore. Her major field of research includes star clusters (open and globular), star formation and pre-MS stars, galactic structures, magellanic Clouds and stellar population. She completed her Doctorate in 1996 from the same institute. At Indian Institute of Astrophysics, her current projects include, emission line stars in star clusters, star formation history of young star clusters, candidate old open clusters - unravelling the old disk and halo of the small magellanic cloud amongst many others. She is also an active member of the Indian Astronomical Union.

Did you know?

X-rays were discovered in 1895 by the German physicist Wilhelm Konrad von Röntgen. He used this new form of radiation to photograph objects that were hidden behind opaque shields. Soon after that, X-rays were used as an important diagnostic tool in medicine.
