There has been some reduction in poverty levels in India due to a higher growth trajectory since mid-1990’s & improvement in certain human development indicators. However, there is still a long way to go, as the incidence of poverty remains high due to growth imbalances.

The Indian economy has moved to a higher growth trajectory since mid-1990’s and key economic reforms. As a consequence, there has been some reduction in poverty levels and improvement in certain human development indicators. However, there is still a long way towards “Quality of Growth”- a growth formula that integrates social and environmental concerns. The current five-year plan of the Government of India emphasizes the need for “faster, more sustainable and inclusive growth”. India and Germany share political experience and views in this area:

  • In November 2012, GIZ on behalf of the German Government initiated the “First Indo-German Dialogue on Social Policy concerning Smart Cards in Social Administration: Health Cards”. The participants on political side: Ministry of Labour and Employment and the German Ministry of Health.
  • In April 2013, the “Second Indo-German Dialogue on Social Policy Quality Assurance in RSBY Network Health Care Institutions” was held in New Delhi with the indian partners Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the German Ministry of Health
  • 28th of April 2012 the Federal Minister of Health Daniel Bahr visited RSBY in Mehsana, Gujarat
  • In October 2013, Germany supported the Regional Conference on Investor Protection in the Capital Market in Mumbai. Designed and organised by GIZ, a platform for exchange between Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) and Bundesanstalt für Finanzdienstleistungen (BaFin).
  • July 2012 High Level dialogue “Enabling Business Action for Sustainable Future: Will India Lead or Lag?” with the partners Media House MINT, SEBI, National Stock Exchange, Confederation of Indian Industry, Federation of Small and Medium Enterprises and Observer Research Foundation and GIZ.
  • October 2012 launched at the Annual Summit of the Sustainable Business Leadership Forum “Policy dialogue on Leveraging Existing Institutional Frameworks to Drive Environmental and Social Disclosure in India” with IICA and GIZ....
  • In April 2013 First Stakeholder consultation on role of firms, market and regulators to define possible research and dialogue on this topic of increasing relevance in India with the title “Responsible Corporate Governance: A New Paradigm for Corporate Conduct”.
  • In May 2013 the Indo-German Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) Forum “Strengthening linkages between Indian and German Associations” with the Ministry of MSME, SIDBI, the Indo-German Chamber of Commerce, Sequa and GIZ.
