Nokia and GIZ are collaborating to set up projects in two Indian cities, Ahmedabad and Kolkata, with the objective of transforming the consumption patterns with a focus on sustainable e-waste management. The outcome of the project shall be the collection and recycling of electronic waste (e-waste) from mobile phones and accessories being undertaken in a more efficient and sustainable way in these cities. The project partners will establish a business linkage between informal waste collector and recycling companies, and empower the informal sector waste collectors to collect and sell e-waste to a responsible recyclers instead of illegal ones, thereby protecting livelihoods and the environment. Furthermore, the project will engage with youth on sustainable consumption by mainstreaming the subject into school and college curricula, organizing environmental engagement programs and introducing new collection channels through schools and colleges. The raised awareness among youth will gradually lead to a behavioral change regarding Recycling.
