National Visa - General Information

If you plan to live in Germany for a period of more than 90 days, you will need a German national visa.

The German Consulate General in Kolkata issues visas for residents under its consular area, which includes the states of: West Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand, Odisha, Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura.

The location of passport issuance is not relevant for the said determination. Instead, you should have been resident in the consular area during the past six months. You should also be able to provide proof of your residence inside the consulate’s jurisdiction.

If you plan to live and work or study in Germany for a period of more than 90 days, you will need a German national visa. Please note that for German National Visas, a personal interview at your German Mission is mandatory.

You can apply for the following types of National Visas: Student visa, Employment visa, Training or Internship visa, Guest Scientist/Research visa, Family Reunion visa, Job-seeker visa, Au Pair visa, Speciality cook visa, and Intended marriage visa.

How to schedule an appointment: You can schedule an appointment for National (Long Term) Visa interviews through the VFS Helpline: 022-67866013 or by writing an e-mail at infoeast.germanin@vfshelpline.com.

Please Note: Every National-Visa applicant may book ONLY ONE appointment. Multiple booking of appointments will NOT be accepted by the German Consulate in Kolkata. In case of multiple bookings for one person, the applicant will lose both/all bookings, and will have to re-apply for a later appointment.

Do not be Victimised! It has been brought to our notice that some local agents and student counsellors are charging exorbitant sums of money to schedule visa appointments. The fact of the matter, however, is that ALL visa appoinments are handled ONLY by VFS and at NO COST! We request you to not fall prey to tactics of any person or agency claiming that they can arrange a student-visa interview slot for you at the German Consulate Kolkata. They can't! Also, please refrain from giving out personal details such as passport number, date of birth, etc. to any third party. We request you all to be vigilant in important matters such as these.
