Schengen Visa - General Information


A Schengen Visa entitles you to visit Germany and/or other Schengen countries for less than or up to 90 days.

The Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mumbai can only accept visa applications of persons residing in the states of  Maharashtra, Gujarat, Goa, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh as well as the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli.

What is the maximum duration of stay on a Schengen Visa?

A Schengen Visa entitles the Schengen visa holder to visit Germany and/or the other Schengen countries for a total of up to 90 days within a period of 6 months from the date of issue.

Which countries constitute the Schengen area?

The Schengen area includes countries Germany, Austria, Belgium, Czech Reublic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

What are the types of Schengen visa one can apply for?

The types of Schengen Visa include Tourist visas, Airport Transit visas, Business visas, Trade fair visas, Guest Scientist Visas, Training visas, Visit visas, Medical treatment visas, Group (culture, sports, religious events, film crews, etc) visas.

What's the earliest one can apply for a Schengen Visa?

Duly completed application forms may be submitted three months prior to the intended travel date.

How long does it take to process a Schengen Visa?

It can take up to two weeks to process a Schengen visa, and even longer in certain individual cases.

Where does one submit one's Schengen Visa application?

The German Missions in India have started outsourcing the handling of Schengen visa applications to VFS Global. Now, every client will have the option to submit his/her visa application at a nearby Visa Application Centre.

What are the fees for processing a Schengen Visa?

Schengen Visa processing fees:

Adult: 60 EUR or  4900 INR
Minor (6-12 years):35 EUR or  2900 INR
Minors (under 6 years): 0 EUR  or  0 INR

The Schengen visa processing fees are exclusive of the VFS service and logistic charges.
