Starting from June 2023 spouses and minor children of holders of a National visa or residence permit under any employment paragraph will be eligible to submit their application(s) for family reunion visa at VFS together with the reference.
There is no need for an additional appointment anymore if your family members join you at the date of your appointment.
The exception from the A1 requirement depends on the sub-category your partner / parent is working on. The most common exceptions are spouses and children of Blue Card, ICT Card holders and Scientists. In order to get a clear picture on all possible exceptions, please check our newsletter.
Furthermore, the visa section has introduced new sub-categories for family reunion.
In order to improve our services and reduce waiting times for all applicants for family reunion, we have teamed up with our partner VFS to offer appointments not only at the Consulate but for selected categories also at VFS.
Therefore, it is essential that you book your appointment in the correct sub-category to obtain the earliest possible appointment.
Here is how to do it:
In general, it all depends on the residence permit or visa of your partner. Therefore, please check your partner’s permit or visa sticker for the correct paragraph! Then chose the correct sub-category for your re-registration.

The issued visa / residence permit could have been granted under several articles like Guest scientist, Researcher, PhD Student. So the applicant will always have to present the scholarship agreement / confirmation

D - Family Reunion: Spouse and / or child of foreigner living in Germany with student visa
Your partner is a German or EU national
D - Family Reunion: Spouse, child or parent of a German/ EU National OR Minor travelling alone
If you have a German certificate
D - Family Reunion: Holder of a German civil status certificate (German birth certificate + German marriage certificate)
Reference has a National visa or a residence permit as any other employment
Only chose this option if the above mentioned options do NOT apply!

Please note that due to limited capacities waiting times may apply. If appointment slots are fully booked, you will have the possibility to register on a waiting list via VFS. Registrations on the waiting list will receive a notification once new appointment slots are available. You will receive an email on your registered email ID informing you about your appointment status once the appointments are released.
