Obtaining Indian documents

To obtain official copies of Indian documents, such as those certifying your civil status, it is not necessary to visit the Indian authorities in person as per the missions’ experience. It is also possible, for example, to ask relatives living there to obtain them on your behalf.

Also lawyers may obtain these documents on your behalf. You can find potential contacts in the ‘List of Lawyers’.

Please note that German authorities often only recognise Indian documents once they have undergone a document verification.

Obtaining German documents

If you require an official copy of your German birth certificate or other documents indicating civil status, please contact the registry office in Germany that has issued your certificate directly.

Please note that German certificates are often only recognised in India once they have been attested by the Indian missions in Germany. Further information on this can be found on the website of the Indian Embassy in Berlin.
