The German Consulate Mumbai restores a section of the Jewish Cemetery in Mumbai
On July 3rd, 2024, the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Mumbai, the Consulate General of Israel in Mumbai, and Mr. Solomon Sopher, Chairman & Managing Director of Jacob Sassoon Trust, celebrated the completion of the restoration of the Jewish Chinchpokli Cemetery in Mumbai. This project constituted the beautification and restoration of the final resting place for European Jews.
During the ceremony, Consul General of Israel to Midwest India, Mr. Kobbi Shoshani, highlighted the global impact of the Holocaust, emphasizing how India became a sanctuary for many Jews fleeing persecution. He remarked, “India has always reflected its strong tolerant democratic fabric by demonstrating inclusiveness in society, so much so that the Jews who rest here were warmly accepted.”
German Consul Ms. Clara Duske underscored the significance of the event, noting the collaborative efforts of India, Israel, and Germany in preserving the heritage of European Jews who found a safe haven in India. She remarked on the unique nature of this international cooperation.
Mr. Solomon Sopher emphasized the importance of restoring the gravesites, noting that it symbolized the solidarity of the Jewish communities in India.
Ms. Jinx Ackerkar, a Holocaust survivor, who was present on the occasion, shared her poignant experiences with the attendees, including the heads and members of the Jewish community.
